Signs of a blocked drain

A drain rarely blocks without warning. It usually drains a little slower than it used to, then a little slower again, until water starts to sit in the basin or rise in the floor trap. Gurgling and a persistent smell are often part of the same picture.

  • Water draining away noticeably more slowly than it used to
  • Water standing in a basin, sink, or floor trap after use
  • Gurgling sounds from a drain or from a nearby fixture
  • A persistent foul smell coming from a drain
  • Water rising in one outlet when another is used
  • Water backing up into a shower area or floor trap
  • The toilet or basin draining away unusually slowly
  • A blockage that keeps returning after being cleared before

What the visit may involve

What the blockage is made of matters, because it determines how it can be cleared. Soap and hair behave differently from grease, food waste, or a buildup of scale in an older line, and the approach is chosen accordingly.

  • Assessing where the blockage sits and whether more than one outlet is affected
  • Clearing blockages in basin, sink, and shower waste pipes
  • Clearing floor traps and accessible gully traps
  • Clearing kitchen lines that have accumulated grease and food waste
  • Clearing toilet waste lines where the cause is a blockage rather than a cistern fault
  • Using the clearing method appropriate to the blockage, such as rodding, mechanical clearing, or water jetting
  • Checking that water drains away freely once cleared

What to know

  • Not every blockage clears on the first attempt. Root ingress, collapsed or misaligned pipework, and long-standing scale can mean the line needs further work rather than a straightforward clearing.
  • Where the blockage sits in a shared stack or a common line, the work may fall to the building management rather than to a single unit.
  • Repeated blockages point to an underlying fault in the pipe rather than to debris, and clearing alone will not resolve that.
  • The condition of older pipework is not always knowable in advance, so the approach may need to change once the line has been assessed.

What to tell us

Describe where it is backing up and whether more than one outlet is affected, and we can discuss what clearing it may involve.

  • Which outlets are affected, and whether it is one or several
  • Whether the water drains slowly or does not drain at all
  • Whether it gurgles, smells, or backs up into another fixture
  • Whether the problem has been cleared before, and how long ago
  • Whether the premises is a food business, where grease is likely to be a factor
  • A number to call back on, in case the line drops.

Drain Cleaning questions

Can every blockage be cleared in one visit?

No. Most clear, but blockages caused by root ingress, damaged pipework, or heavy scale can need more than a single visit. We would rather tell you that than promise a one-visit fix we cannot stand behind.

The same drain keeps blocking. Why?

A recurring blockage usually means something structural is trapping debris, or the pipe has a defect, a dipped section, or root entry. That needs to be looked at rather than simply cleared again.

Can I use a chemical drain cleaner first?

Chemical cleaners are best avoided. They can damage older pipework and seals, rarely clear anything beyond a light blockage, and leave a caustic residue that has to be dealt with by whoever attends next.

My neighbour and I are both affected. What does that mean?

It usually means the blockage is in a shared stack or common line, which normally sits with the building management. It is worth raising it with them at the same time.
